My aesthetics as a clay artist are inspired by the shapes of objects and forms I see around me: leaves, pods, boats, spirals, gourds, the moon. My fascination with Native American clay pots and the culture that they reflect, is often the starting point from which I create my own contemporary designs. A sense of movement, balance and simplicity are important elements in my work.

One technique I use to create pieces is to roll out slabs of clay, cut them into smaller strips and then start the building process by layering and overlapping. I prefer working with clay that is as soft and pliable as possible so that I can allow the forms to evolve naturally. To complete my pieces, I use the dramatic, exciting, and unpredictable process of raku. The rich effects of raku enhance and compliment what I like to call my ‘organic’ pieces and my hope is that they reflect my appreciation for the rich beauty of the New Mexico landscape.

Since moving to New Mexico from the East Coast in 2003, I am continually inspired by the graceful hills and the subtle color palate of plant life.

Living in the beautiful Cochiti Lake region has allowed me to truly embrace this special place and make it an integral part of my work.
