Jayne has created over 3000 fiber vessels
that can be found in private collections and galleries around
the world. She holds awards from the American Indian Arts
Council and numerous fine art exhibitions. She has two degrees
from Indiana University where she studied environmental
science and anthropology, and has traveled the United States,
reaching thousands of people through workshops and lectures.
Jayne's goals as an artist are to open windows to the soul,
and inspire appreciation for native wisdom and mankind's
ability to live in harmony with the Earth."
Artist's Statement -
"Working from my log home/studio:'Pine Spirits Ranch'
in the majestic Rocky Mountains, I gently transform renewable
natural fibers into vessels of distinction. I explore the
nations landscapes gathering inspiration from the Earth's
subtle colors, textures and patterns. On these treks, I
also gather gems, seeds, roots, and fibers such as pine
needles, sea grasses, driftwood, and wool to give color
and texture to each piece."
"To carry on a family tradition and maintain high
standards of quality, I personally perform all of the creative
aspects involved in my work. My studio employs part-time
assistants, typically art majors at the University of Colorado,
to help with the many tasks that are outside of the creative
process."
"I harvest my gourd bases from American farms, and
allow their individual personalities and shapes to guide
me in the artistic process. The gourds are dried, scrubbed,
and lightly sanded to reveal their natural beauty. To maintain
the integrity of the vessel, I follow the natural curves
and markings to determine the cut. ....Natural based oils
and pigments (my own recipes) are applied in transparent
layers to accentuate natural markings and give depth of
color. I strive to keep colors muted and Earthy, to celebrate
nature's fascinating ability to tastefully blend shades.
I then apply the ancient, painstaking art form of coiled
basketry, starting at the cut rim and weaving my way upward."
I create traditional designs to honor my grandmothers,
balanced with contemporary designs to satisfy my new age
spirit. Upon completing the coiling process, I embellish
and adorn the vessels with 'jewelry' of wire, linen fibers,
gems, seeds, and glass beads to catch the sun's light and
the appreciative eye. Out of respect for nature, no chemical
sealant is used, each gourd is left with a natural matte
finish. Much like my children, Gourdsket (r) Vessels (which
are part gourd - part basket) have individual personalities,
and are named accordingly."
Unfortunately, Jayne met with a devastating car accident
in 2002. A drunk driver plowed into the back of her car
and Jayne suffered an injury to her spine and neck. After
the surgery, Jayne no longer has the rotation, mobility,
or flexibility she once had. "When you are a creative
soul and a doctor looks you in the eye and says you can't
be an artist, it's devastating."
"She wants people to learn one important thing from
her story: Before you make the choice to drive after drinking,
think about those you are jeopardizing .." ..Jayne
continues to make Gourdsket (r) Vessels on a limited basis.
She no longer does shows unless she has help...She does
take individual orders and commissions.
