Mimi Mitchell has traveled and lived in many of the states in
this country. Growing up in upstate New York she was greatly influenced
by the presence of the natural beauty which surrounded her.
The artistic process is one that has been a life long pursuit
for Mimi. The creative process was stimulated in early childhood
with the production of mud pies, finely decorated with flowers,
sticks, stones and bugs. During the teenage years drawing and
painting tools were explored. The discovery of the art of lapidary
and silver smithing came next.
Mimi then went on to a truly great creation, that of marriage
and the building of the family. Once she was confident that her
family was well established, she looked to a new art form and
entered school at the University of New Mexico. As a major in
Fine Art, Mimi was then able to explore many different media such
as ceramics, metal sculpture, papermaking, and painting. For many
years, painting had been her media of choice. Leaving the University
of New Mexico for the University of Colorado also brought exposure
to Book Arts and the Glass World.
Mimi currently works full time with fused, slumped and stained
glass. She maintains a production line of functional glass pieces
as well as regularly submitting fine art glass pieces, and paintings
to varying galleries and shows.
Currently Mimi is exploring the development of glass books, as
well as moving into more architectural applications of her glass
work.
Commissions are welcomed.
Artist statement:
"The process of creation is a gift. When we choose to make
that gift a priority we are honoring ourselves as well as our
creator. We are also given a gift of time. The production of fine
art requires a great deal of time. To produce something that can
explore a process, connecting and exposing the soul of the artist,
and touch someone's heart is a mission not to be undertaken lightly.
I find that I am inspired by the natural world as well as the
ethereal world.
Often when working I am lost in the process and strive to be
able to remove myself (the ego), and become a channel or tool
for a higher source.
I am currently working primarily in warm glass. The processes
of fusing, slumping, and kiln carving require not only technical
skill but also a respect and working understanding of the physics
involved in the natural elements, as well as a healthy dose of
faith.
Glass is a medium that has the ability to retain fluidity, and
yet be suspended in a solid form. The intriguing ability of glass
to expose alternate light, colors and images in varying situations
keeps me excited about the medium. To my mind these abilities
are akin to alchemy.
The play of color and light are a constant intrigue to me."
